The Difference Between Water-Based Paint And Turpentine-Based Paint
There is a lot of confusion about water-based paint and turpentine-based paint. Because what exactly is the difference and when do you apply acrylic paint (water-based) or alkyd paint (turpentine base)? The differences are mainly in the gloss level, durability and the thinner. After today no more confusion, you can read all about the differences in this blog.
The differences: acrylic paint and alkyd paint
The difference between these paints is mainly in the thinner used. Acrylic paint is also called water-based paint, and with it you immediately hit the nail on the head. This paint is diluted with water. This mainly affects the gloss level of the paint, which is lower than the gloss level of a turpentine-borne paint. A water-based paint contains fewer harmful substances and is therefore better for health and the environment.
Alkyd paint (turpentine borne) contains more soluble (harmful) substances, this is also the reason that this paint is more harmful to your health. This immediately turns the paint into a more durable paint. By using these substances, a higher degree of gloss is achieved in the paint, making it stronger and therefore more durable. It is important to mention that these properties are simply not needed everywhere, but you can read more about that below.
When do you use white spirit or water based paint?
You only use a turpentine-borne paint when you paint outside. The paint has a lot to endure here due to the weather conditions. That is why the strong properties of turpentine-borne paints come in handy here. Painters are no longer allowed to use turpentine-based paints within the company. In addition to the harmful effects, you also have a chance of yellowing the paint when used indoors.
Water-based paints are mainly used indoors and are odorless. With acrylic paint you have less chance of yellowing. In addition, these are better for the environment and your health.
The differences in an overview;
